Research Focus Knowledge

How can the huge amount of data that is continuously collected and saved in all areas of our so-called information society be efficiently managed and effectively used? How can meaningful information be found within these huge data volumes, and how can knowledge hidden in this information be detected? How can computer programs be developed that process this knowledge and use it appropriately to solve practical problems just as well as or even better than human experts? The meaning of these questions for the development of our society should not be underestimated. Not only in industry and economy information and knowledge are considered as important resources and competitive factors, but even the scientific progress in data-intensive research fields such as, e.g., bioinformatics will significantly benefit from the solution of the aforementioned problems.

 

The research focus knowledge is at the intersection of several well-established disciplines such as databases, artificial intelligence and statistics. Our research projects deal with methodical and technological fundamentals of the acquisition, modeling and representation, management and processing of data, information and knowledge that are considered as raw materials and products, respectively. Metaphoric technical terms such as Data Warehouses, Data Mining or Knowledge Management emphasize this perspective.

Relation to other key aspects

There are several cooperations with other research focuses on image and interaction of the faculty that are directly resulting from the need for a visual exploration of knowledge and the interaction with huge amounts of knowledge. The DFG project AUCOMA develops, e.g., procedures for the efficient visualization and interactive search and exploration of large music collections. Furthermore, since 2008, three work groups from Magdeburg are involved in the Scalable Visual Analytics priority project funded by the DFG.

 

The research focus knowledge is closely connected to the University’s research focuses on Intelligent Interactive Systems and Digital Engineering.
